International Women's Day is a day recognized to honor the contributions of women in the fields of education, business, culture, and politics. Women's rights and gender equality are highlighted on this day.

In Sydney, the theme for this years' International Women's Day is #BreakTheBias, a nod to the vital role that women, men, and individuals of all gender identities play in achieving gender parity.

This coming March 8, here are some events you can join in celebrating International Women's Day!

1. International Women's Day 2022: Building Back Fairer

March 8, 2022, 8:00 am

Rare Birds has asked a panel of experts to share their thoughts and ideas on developing an Australian economy that works for everyone.

Guest speakers include:

The Hon. Bronwyn Taylor, MLC, Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women

Prof. Marian Baird, Professor of Gender and Employment Relations and Head of the Discipline of Work and Organisational Studies at the University of Sydney

Lisa Annese, CEO of Diversity Council Australia

What to expect from this event?

A complimentary live breakfast and networking event will be held for guests in Sydney. For those who can't make it there in person, they will provide a link to a live stream.

At the event in Sydney, attendees will have the opportunity to meet and network with speakers and other attendees over a light breakfast and drinks. Along with that, they'll get a copy of #IFSHECANICAN, written by Jo Burston.

5. #BreakTheBias: Women Poets Perform on International Women's Day

March 8, 2022, 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Poetry Sydney fosters new ideas, discoveries, and creative impulses by showcasing contemporary Australian poets. Poets from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines are featured in this event.

The following women poets are among those who will be featured in a live-streamed hour-long performance of their work:

The evening's host will be an acclaimed writer, Opera Australia director, and performer of Six Quick Chicks, Liesel Badorrek.

Award-winning writer, director, and performer Melita Rowston, whose recent play Cockroach toured internationally to rave reviews

Performance poet powerhouse, actor, dancer, and activist Mel Ree

Esteemed Sydney-based poet Elizabeth Allen's poetry, short fiction, and literary criticism are published in well-respected Australian publications.

Poet and editor Michele Seminara, whose second full-length collection, Suburban Fantasy (UWA Publishing, 2021), is a feminist exploration of the dark underbelly of suburbia

Cabaret poetry diva and former Inner West Councillor Stanmore Ward for The Greens, Lou Steer.

Video poetry by Elena Knox, whose work amplifies impulses to totemism, idolatry, and fetishism, is represented by Anomaly, Japan, and award-winning Papua New Guinean-Australian digital content maker and poet Alana Hicks.

6. Ten13 Founder AMA: Kim Teo & Holly Cardew

8. International Women’s Day: Innovation Insights

March 7 - 10, 2022

An opportunity to reflect on progress gained, demand for change, and celebrate the achievements of women is International Women's Day (IWD).
